David McIntosh 1812 - 1864

David McIntosh was born Feb 2, 1812 in Craiglochie, Kilspindie, Perthshire, Scotland. His parents were Robert McIntosh and Agnes Bartie both of Pertshire, Scotland. Little is know about David's early life in Scotland. On March 31, 1838 David was married Mary Freer in London, England in the Clerkenwell district. Mary was the daughter of John Freer who was a bricklayer. The marriage certificate lists David's occupation as a Baker. Their residence is listed as 21 St. John's Lane, Clerkenwell, county of Middlesex. They were married at the Church of St. John's in Clerkenwell.

David and Mary emigrated to Restigouche, New Brunswick in June of 1839. Their first born was Robert McIntosh, born in 1840. David received a land grant for land in the Jacquet River in Durham parish of Restigouche,NB.

Not much is known about their pioneer life.

Robert McIntosh - 1840-1919

Robert McIntosh was the son of David McIntosh and Mary Freer. Robert was born on 17 Nov. 1840 in New Brunswick. Ira M. Beattie on his Family Tree Maker website,

familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/e/a/Ira-M-Beattie/tree1.html,

says that Robert was born in Doyleville Settlement, Restigouche, NB. Robert's Obituary says that he was born in Jacquet River, Restigouche, NB. His death certificate says that he was born in Dalhousie,Restigouche, NB, and finally Robert himself on his naturalization to the U.S. swears that he was born in Bathurst, Gloucester, NB. I am more likely to believe in the naturalization papers because Robert himself provided the info. The info in the obituary and death certificate was provided by family members. I would say on the most part that obituaries and death certificates are generally pretty accurate, but you must remember that they are usually provided by info by relatives who may or may not have all the correct info.

Robert is shown with his family on the 1851 census for Durham, Restigouche, NB.

McIntosh David 38, Husband, Scotch, June 1839, Farmer.
Mary 34, Wife, English, June 1839.
Ch., Birth: Robert 12, Agness 10, David 7,
Jane 5, Peter 3, John 2.

On the 1861 census for Bathurst, Gloucester, NB he is shown married to Margaret (Barclay).

McIntosh Robert 22, fa., N.B., Labourer, Presb.
Margaret 18, wi., N.B., Presb.

The 1871 Bathurst census shows Robert and Margaret with their children,

McIntosh Robert, fa., 31, N.B. , Presb., Scotch, Ship carpenter.
Margaret, wi., 27, N.B., Presb., Scotch.
Ch., N.B., Presb., Scotch: Mary E. 9, Hugh J. 7, Jane 5, Annie J. 2.

Robert's wife Margaret dies sometime in 1873, either at the birth of her last son, Robert Barclay McIntosh or shortly thereafter. Ira reports that Robert was distraught following the death of his wife, Margaret and consequently left for parts unknown. The children are found on the 1881 NB census with relatives. Mary and Robert are with their Aunt Elizabeth McIntosh Miller, Jane is with her grandmother Barclay, Catherine in Bathurst. Hugh James is with his Grandmother, Mary Freer McIntosh in Durham, Restigouche. Annie and David have not been found. I speculate that either they died at birth or before the 1881 census or they were adopted out and their name changed.

Robert however is found remarried to Ella Sunderland on the 1880 census for Westport, Clinton, Pennsylvania. They have two children, Carrie and Samuel. His occupation is with lumber.

I have been able to find baptisms for all of Robert and Margaret's children, except for Hugh. The baptisms are with a Presbyterian church in Bathurst, St. Luke's. I feel that Robert and Margaret were Married probably in 1861. I have searched marriage records for Bathurst up until 1860 and have come up empty. There is a St. Luke's church record that says they became members of the church in March of 1861.

Margaret either died in Gloucester or Restigouche county. On this church record, it says that Robert and Margaret went to Durham, Restigouche. It also had for Margaret that she had died. Robert Barclay McIntosh's marriage record and obituary says that he was born in Jacquet River. So she probably died in Jacquet River.

Hugh's family

Hugh James McIntosh was born in Bathurst, Gloucester, New Brunswick on 4 Jan 1866 to Robert McIntosh and Margaret Barclay. Robert and Margaret were married about 1861 probably in Bathurst, NB. Their children were: Mary Elizabeth (1862), Hugh James (1866), Catherine Jane Barclay(1866), Annie Josephine (1869), David Allan (1871), and Robert Barclay (1873). Margaret died either at the birth of her last born or shortly after in 1873. Her parents were Robert Barclay and Catherine Fletcher of Bathurst. Nothing more is known about Margaret. Her burial place is unknown but is suspected to be buried in Restigouche or Gloucester counties.

Hugh James McIntosh - 1866 - 1943

I first started working on my family history when I was a teenager. My first record was a death certificate for my great grandfather, Hugh James McIntosh. The death certificate said his father was Robert McIntosh born in Scotland and Margaret Barkley. It said his birth place was Bathrush, Canada. For years, I could find nothing. Bathrush simply did not exist. Though there was a Bathurst, New Brunswick that fit the bill. Also my father had always told me that Hugh was born in Canada in a french speaking providence. The 1881 Canadian Census was put online by the LDS church, and one name stood out, Hugh James McIntosh in Durham, Restigouche, New Brunswick. That was so exciting. Then I knew that Bathurst was the place. He was listed with a Joseph, William, Mary, Catherine Euphemia, and a Mary McIntosh, age 64 born in England, widowed. This perplexed me, because I still could not find his parents, Robert and Margaret.

Years went by, I grew up, graduated High School, got married, started college and eventually moved out to Eugene, Oregon. It was in 2004 that I got my big break. I posted a query on ancestry.com in the New Brunswick message board. I got a reply that said I would find Hugh's family on Ira M. Beattie's site. I went to the site, and sure enough, there was Robert McIntosh and Margaret Barclay, her name was mispelled on Hugh's death certificate. Unfortunately, Ira had died a month before, I was dismayed, but grateful that I had found Hugh's family in New Brunswick.

McIntosh family of Restigouche, New Brunswick

I have been working on my McIntosh family history for a long time and decided that one of the best ways to help this work proceed is to start a blog for my McIntosh family who emigrated from Scotland to the shores of Chaleur in Restigouche and Gloucester counties in northern New Brunswick.
